My life closed in on me in my twenties. I racked up one chronic joint pain problem after another. Migraines made me feel like being dead. Severe fatigue also held me back. I dropped out of competitive sports, at my pinnacle, because of undiagnosable knee pain. I missed party after party, napping beforehand and invariably getting up the next day. My friend Juan BEGGED me to try macrobiotics, claiming it would get me “back out on the soccer field.” I didn’t believe him. For almost ten years.
Along with a body betraying me came struggles with depression, and anxiety from fearing old age, as much pain as I was in already.
Almost a decade into my life of constraining options I was in the worst physical pain ever. With whispers of suicidal ideation, I decided to accept Juan’s (desperate) offer to cook for me for ten days, so that I could make an informed choice.
That was the beginning of nothing short of a transformation — physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Psychologically — anxiety evaporated. Mentally — overwhelm and distraction shifted to laser focus. Spiritually, I realized how very simple life really was. Energy-wise — fatigue nosedived. My supervisor promptly asked what happened, what my secret was?! The rheumatologist told me to keep doing whatever I was doing. I even spontaneously reconciled with my estranged father three months later!
With this 180, I finally had a path forward! I had a way to control my life’s journey. And with these keys to freedom came responsibility — to drive in the direction of my desire.
The lens through which I make decisions will forever be made from macrobiotic principles. I cannot unsee what I saw. I cannot unknow what I experienced — that food choices DRAMATICALLY control the quality and outcome of everyday life.
